I Guess I'm Doing a Substack Now
A quick Q & A
What exactly is this going to be?
Ha ha ha, good question!
No, really, what is this going to be?
A memoir in Substacks? A Substack memoir? Submemoir? Memoirstack?
Here’s the plan: every day, I’m going to write a micromemoir—something small, a few sentences at most—about a topic. After a few weeks (probably once a month—I promise not to crowd your inbox with my business), I’ll send you what I make out of those fragments.
Why “49 Bye-Byes”?
Because what captivates me the most is the idea of goodbye: not necessarily of loss, but of those moments of separation or schism or change when you find yourself saying goodbye to something: a person, a place, an way of thinking, a version of yourself, a part of yourself, something you thought would always be in your life, something you’ve been waiting to say good riddance to. I’m interested in that moment when something shifts, even something very small, and in what happens after, how one makes peace or picks up the pieces or celebrates or just finds a way to go on with one’s day.
Because I’m planning to every day of every week—or almost every day of almost every week—of the year. It’s 49 instead of all 52 because if there is anything I’ve learned in this life, it’s that sometimes you just need to give it a rest.
Because “49 Bye-Byes” is one of my favorite Crosby, Stills, and Nash songs. You can listen to it here. Actually, you should also listen to Stephen Still’s “49 Bye-Byes/America’s Child (Live)” from 4 Way Street, because it’s awesome and also relevant.
